TN: 2004 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  • 2004 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (6/11/2014)
After a number of barnyardy CDPs in the last year (including one or two Charvins), I was feeling a little gun shy on this one. No need, though, as this was a very clean, brett-free bottle. I last had this wine almost exactly 3 years ago and it has evolved beautifully in that time. The nose is a musky mix of sweet floral aromas, baked cherries (think warm cobbler), and brown spices. It’s medium bodied and full of finesse on the palate, with raspberry preserves, pipe tobacco, and dried sage leading to a long, drying finish. If the tannins were less drying on the back end, this would merit an even higher score. As it is, though, it’s an extremely satisfying wine that should drink well for at least the next 4-5 years. (94 pts.)
