This is a really nice bottle of wine but just a bit too young. I opened about an hour before dinner and took a tiny sip just to make sure it wasn’t corked. I noticed the tannin was pretty formidable so I immediately decanted. At about 1 hour air time it started to soften a bit. It got progressively better over the course of three hours in the decanter. It’s a kind of heavy CDP. Dark purple in color with a hefty mouthfeel. The fruit aromas/tastes leaned to the darker side of things with blackberry and currant. The wine had a nice freshness to it. By that I mean it was a clean tasting, not sappy, not cloying, balanced wine. I think this wine has a lot going for it and I’m going to try to save my remaining bottles for a few more years before opening another.
I just put this wine into our closeout bins for $40-ish bucks.
There’s just no space for it any more. Kind of sad since I agree with your tasting note and assessment to its potential.
We recently sold the 2006 for $39, and sold out of the 2007 for $51. That being said, just picked up some of the amazing 1998 overseas and looking forward to drinking that again.
These wines are good, they just need lots of time.
IMO it’s a very nice wine for $40. I paid $55 three and a half years ago and at the time that was a competitive price.
the 98 papet is one of the top 5 wines of the vintage. spectacularly balanced.
it’s also by far the best value for luxury (hate that word) cdp.
have 1 more of the unreal 1990 sitting somewhere.
1990, drank 2 months ago, amazing indeed…
