2004 Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape- France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (10/12/2016)
This wine is fantastic to me. It is not concentrated or a fruit bomb. It starts quite closed and somewhat monolithic. Ripe darker fruit. With about an hour of aeration however the structure subsides and the wine blossoms. Beautiful spice. Darker fruit. A really wonderful finish. Not powerful but so sexy. I like this. It is more about finesse than power. I do like Mont Olivet.
I completely agree. I had this at a Panzer tasting a few years ago and bought a bunch. A great example of how you don’t need the high end cuvée to have a delightful wine experience.
I had a bottle of this in CDP in August. I’d guess it hadn’t traveled more than a few kilometers in its entire life. Great bottle and a memorable experience. For 26 euros there and I see it’s available right now stateside for $45.
Well, yes, ´13 (and ´14 to a lesser degree) were no great years … but I´ve tasted a lot of wines from these vintages that were simply more satisfying … the MO was lacking mid-weight and length … (´13 was kind of hollow) … ´14 slightly better, but a bit too light (not in alc but in intensity) …
Just fwiw: Bois de Boursan (same price-level or even cheaper) was better and more interesting …
