TN: 2004 Chateau Les Grand Chenes

2004 Chateau Les Grand Chenes - 7/9

  • Nice floral nose, violets, fruit, nothing overwhelming or jumping out of the glass but subtle and solid, still young and vibrant. In the mouth, the youth continues but the wine feels well integrates, nothing sharp or out of place. Very much pleasurable but not super complex and structured. ‘Just enough’ would be an apt phrase. Good fruit, subtle dark fruit, green pepper and a bit of black licorice. Some tannins but not mouth coating even after a few glasses. A nice QPR for a '04 Bordeaux Superior. The '05 has much more structure but this is a good everyday drinker which is drinking well right now.
  • This was a pop and pour. Sat in glass for about 30 mins prior to consuming.

This wine is always successfull at GJE blind tastings.

It belongs definitively to the best QPR in Bordeaux. Mr Magrez is really coming to the top for all his wines. Recently, his St Emilion Fombrauge has won the Crus Classés Cup and more recently, his Tour Blanche, a médoc AOC has reached (vintage 2006) a very good ranking.

More and more, we will notice that many wines, at decent value, are able to compete with some crus which have very sensible higher price.

Maybe the beginning of a mew market for wines that we will be happy to drink and not only to put in our cellars for other purposes.

Thanks for the note. It has been almost 2 years since I had this and it sounds like it is moving along nicely. My last note said hold until 2010 which sounds like good timing based on your note. What are your aging thoughts based on your structure comment.
