TN: 2004 Château Haut-Brion (France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan)

Open in bottle for 3hrs…has it really been 8yrs since I had this last?? Seductive Bordeaux nose of currants, creme de cassis, pencil shavings, plum liqueur, tobacco spice, smoke. Silky smooth and plush…dark red berry fruits, juicy, yet still showing some green tobacco and dusty dry tannin, med bodied from the vintage. I actually like the more elegant, less powerful vintage here. Shows more of the nuances of the earth, florals, and spice, rather the powerful juicy fruits. Super graphite powder dryness, scorched earth tones, smoke, licorice, violet florals…slight leather from age. Can’t wait to have this with some NY strips later tonight! Always a pleasure to drink these!!! (94 pts.)

Thanks for the nice note–I’ve got some of these and have been wondering how they were doing.

Only have one, so really appreciate the insight.

Perfection with grilled NY’s and sautéed mushrooms…wife loved it…told me we should have CASES of this!! :astonished:

Hi Buzz, thank you for the tasting note on this wine. I absolutely love HB, my favorite of the First Growths. I remember tasting the '04 at the Chateau years ago and was amazed at how it performed for a lesser vintage. How do you think this wine will age moving forward? I prefer mature Bordeaux, generally 25+ years for bigger vintages. I like where the 80’s and 90’s are right now, still trying to keep my hands off of the 96’s. Do you think the '04 will age another 10+ years before starting a slow decline? I only have one Mag. of the '04 and zero singles. It is one of my kids birth year wines and I would prefer to hold it, but I don’t want to miss it either. Greatly appreciate your insight. Cheers

It’s a kid birth year wine for me too. No plan to open a bottle until he turns 30. And I don’t have mags!!

Came across this in my desk drawer at work and gosh do I miss the days of reasonable Bdx pricing!

Because it’s my oldest son’s birth year, I bought a few 2004s on futures, including a number from TCWC at the prices on this list. Now I just focus on buying older Bordeaux.

i remember when costco were giving this away for less than a bill. great times.
