- 2004 Bodegas Alto Moncayo Campo de Borja Veraton - Spain, Aragón, Campo de Borja (7/3/2024)
An excellent wine, but not quite as much improvement as I had expected when I wrote my last note in 2012. I have cellared this bottle for 17-ish years and it was a steal at $18 for the "third" wine of Moncayo, The fruit - mostly raspberry - has come to the front and is very expressive with acidity and some general spice. The disadvantage is it has not smoothed out like I expected. The alcohol level is 15.5% and is now more apparent. If you told me this was pushing the high 16%s, I would not be surprised. My $18 price is $27 today with inflation and that's what it appears to cost now. Maybe I am being unfair because I am expecting the smoothness of Rayas for the price of a Kia. The failure to shed the roughness is the negative, But for $27, it is a good value. (91 points)
