TN: 2003 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva

  • 2003 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva - Chile, Central Valley, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto (8/26/2011)
Impressive. Clearly a modern, New World red without much of a sense of place, but extremely well-made and balanced. Dark crimson and medium-to-full-bodied, with very sharply defined plum and blackberry fruit and surprisingly well-integrated oak that doesn’t distract from the primary strengths. There’s noticeable tobacco, but it plays a much more secondary role than it would in Bordeaux. The mouthfeel is terrifically velvety and reaches every corner of your palate. This doesn’t have much acid but it’s still highly tannic at age 8–it’s certainly in its drinking window but it has a ways to go. Fairly priced at $75. Highly recommended for those who like dark, internationally styled wines. (91 pts.)
