One could posit that old Togni is as close to Bordeaux as Napa gets. This 2003 plays along the same theme, but from a ripe vintage. Hmmm, maybe even a 2003 Pauilliac or St Julien. Heady notes of rich cassis, wet earth, sweet tobacco, and a soft vein of menthol. Big palate feel, rich and caressing dark fruits, wet soils and tobacco. Tannins pretty resolved, long rich streaky finish. This is a big wine for my palate, needed a grilled steak. (92 pts.)

Been sitting on one in the cellar. How long did it need in the decanter?
Not long, really. It’s fairly open for business. I gave it 30 minutes.

Togni wines march to a different drummer, but my experience with other high end 2007’s is that age has generally not been their friend. They were built for early drinking. Not bad, but better younger. But again, there’s a high probability Togni isn’t on that same path and would be the exception.
