2003 Peju Province Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Estate Bottled - USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford (4/8/2011)
Short decant, enjoyed over 3 hours. A bit of a muted nose initially for a wine of this price level and somewhat of an initial disappointment but it did improve slightly a few hours into it. Notes of cherry, cedar and some heat betraying the 15+ ABV. In the mouth, the wine starts to come into its own and has a wonderful texture, full bodied and silky smooth. Quite a bit of oak influence (24 months in 100% new French oak) but is integrated fairly well. The taste includes layers of cassis, cherry, lavender/perfume with a little cedar and vanilla. A bit hot as you would expect but better than many wines in the 15% range and doesn’t bother me as most others do. Smooth transition to the finish with a consistent profile but with some sweet, chalky rubber at the end of the 30 second plus finish. Overall, a very enjoyable wine that is probably best enjoyed on its own to allow you to fully enjoy the long finish but a bit of a stretch in terms of QPR at $150. (93 pts.)
