TN: 2003 La Pousse d'Or Santenay 1er Cru Gravières

  • 2003 La Pousse d’Or Santenay 1er Cru Gravières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay 1er Cru (2/2/2014)
For those of you who think 2003 Burgundies are fat, overblown, cooked, prune like and full of raisins, here is my counterexample. This was a phenomenal bottle of wine. Sure there was ample fruit but it was not at ALL cooked. Beautiful fruit with earthy tones, dusty tannins and boatloads of acidity. This wine was incredibly well balanced. Thanks to all who wrote off the 2003 vintage so I can have more of these for less! (94 pts.)

My sense is that some 2003s are going to always be fat, overblown, cooked, prune like and full of raisins, but that some are just starting to turn into wine. It will be interesting to see what these better wines will taste like in 5-10 years.

Yep. I have been holding of but opened this to check in. Glad I did, it was really nice, plenty of time, (years) to run though.

Ed,
The PD Santenay is usually a rather lean wine with high acid.
So, IMO, the 2003 vintage gave it an additional ripeness not usually seen and did not push this wine into the “Ripeland”.
If I find it I’ll give it a try…

I agree, often naturally more austere terroirs do well in riper years.
Not all the time, but very often…
