TN: 2002 Bertheau Chambolle-Musigny

This note was written well after the fact, but I thought it might still be of interest, since relatively few Bertheau notes seem to crop up on the web.

  • 2002 Pierre Bertheau et Fils Chambolle-Musigny - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny (9/13/2009)
Forthcoming fragrances of dark fruits and forest floor, very enticing. The palate is certainly on the lighter weight side, but it is by no means lacking in flavor. The characteristically zippy acidity of ‘02 runs through the juiciness of the fruit and leads into a tannic structure that is slightly firm and in need of time for resolution. This wine appears to have turned the corner into its adolescent phase, but several more years should see it integrate even further. Bertheau has a reputation for light-as-a-feather Chambolles, both in color and weight. This was my first Bertheau bottle, so I was on the lookout, but I did not find that to be the case. This wine is definitely comparable in weight to many other producers’ village Chambolles, and even many Cote de Beaune 1er crus. Furthermore, I found the presence of significant structural components somewhat surprising (in a good way), since some recent lower level '02s already seem to have resolved their frames.

Sounds delish. I haven’t tried any Bertheaus but it sounds like its right up my alley. I’m hoping great things for my 02s.

I’m not a huge Chambolle fan, but I have a boat load respect for this house. The son recently took over wine making, and I think the quality has even jumped up a little. They have awesome blocks too (Charmes, Amoureueses, Bonnes Mares) and the compared to folks like Roumier and Vogue, Bertheau is dramatically less.

I think the lack of scores (or good scores when rated) have keep this wine out of many cellars, but long time Kermit fans own this little gem.

Not a Chambolle fan?!? I’m not sure I understand. Seriously though, village Chambolles, though they can be pricey (especially after '05), are often a fantastic deal for the money. One of the best bargains in village Burgundy, I’d claim. And yes, Bertheau’s pricing is quite reasonable in the context of the village.

I have some of the '02 Charmes as well. Will not open any for a while based on the performance of this bottle. But I’ll definitely be looking out for other bottlings in future vintages.
