TN: 2001 Trimbach Gewurztraminer Cuvée des Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre

  • 2001 Trimbach Gewurztraminer Cuvée des Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre - France, Alsace, Alsace AOC (8/30/2014)
Perhaps the best bottle of Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre I have ever had. Outstanding. The roughness you get in a young Gewurz is gone. There is the normal flavor profile of lychee and spice. There seems to be a bit of tart apple on the palate as well. The nose is lychee. The color is a bit darker than a young Gewurz. No sugar and no real apparent sweetness. I bought this when Jean Trimbach was in NY about 5-7 years ago. Holding to age a bit was definitely worth the wait. Glad I have more. (92 pts.)

CFE or CdSdR? Cuvee Frederic Emile is the Riesling, this is the Gewurz (generally abbreviated as SdR). I have really enjoyed the 2001, the leaner Trimbach style avoids the pitfalls of fat Gewurztraminer.

Ooops, brain fart, will fix.

The '01 Gewirz VT is also outstanding.

Jay, you should have seen a few of my notes on this wine down the page from yours. Agree it is a fabulous wine. I had a few, drank my first a little over a year ago, and promptly went out and bought another half case. Based on two more I’ve had since then, I don’t see any rush to drink them.

David,

I have one bottle of the 2001 Ribeaupierre VT. Is it just entering its window of drinkability? In its prime? Finally, how sweet is it? thanks

Not Jay, but having drunk 3 of these in the past year, I’ll give my opinion: It’s not sweet, though has nice fruit intensity and depth, pretty decent acidity (particularly for a Gewurz), and even some minerality. Definitely in its drinking window, but no rush. Go to Jay’s CellarTracker link, and read the rest of the notes there (including mine) if you want more thoughts.
