Decanted 45 minutes after cork broke and had to do a ‘push in’. What a beautiful expression of a PAX wine in what I think is its golden window. Some great deep purpled tinged magenta color. The nose is violets, blackberries, pomegranate and love. The palate had some great black berries, blue berries, and Bing cherries. There was a hint of white pepper with some tarry notes. Some amazing depth with an unbelievable balance that really did the high wire act. Smooth and fleshed out tannins with just the right touch of acidity, but not too much. As a matter of fact this drank better before food hit the table. A long elegant finish really made this an enjoyable wine. I have always been a fan of this bottling and will continue to look for more.
Well that answers one of my most nagging questions. I have about two cases of assorted Pax from 2003 on and everytime I crack one I wonder if they’ll ever be ready. I guess Ill have to wait.
Humberto, your Cuvee Keltie should be singing.
(my second fav Pax)
Keltie is probably my favorite.
you mean the 03?
Yep. Had it about 6 months ago. Very nice.
I have not had his 2001, will have to seek it out. Castelli is my favorite bottling of the Pax portfolio. We had the 2005 last Saturday and it was really good. However, the 2002 is still my all time favorite.
Thanks for the notes.
Been harping on this being the best bottling for a few years now. Love the 02 and 03. Don’t own any 01 and have yet to crack an 04
Know what’s funny Jordan? I had a bunch of 02s and dumped them (in 2006) thinking they were not my style. This one really needs 7/8 years in bottle. I actually regret that dump. The 01 is very nice indeed.
BTW, if you feel the Scholium Scythias are not your style I can help you in your ‘dump’…
