TN: 2001 Marquis Philips Cabernet Sauvignon S2

  • 2001 Marquis Philips Cabernet Sauvignon S2 - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale (1/3/2026)
Well, this was a pleasant surprise. Still rather purple and opaque, looking more than I expected with no ambering on the edges. Nose was nice and fruity with some dark fruits coming forth. Opened with dark fruits, followed by a little bit of cedar/cigar box notes and finished with slight dry tannins, although the tannins were near completely resolved.

I did not expect much from this wine. Inspired by the “tales from the Crypt” thread, I have been working on some of my wines that I have let age too long…. My knowledge of Australian wines is not deep, but my personal experience with other wines from this wine maker, is that in their youth was that they were too big for me and the alcohol too prominent.

Dan-long time no see. I hope all is well. I remember drinking this wine in the early 2000s and it was very good and very ripe.

Glad you had better results with the Marquis Philips than I did!

“in their youth was that they were too big for me and the alcohol too prominent.”

My friends from Mississippi would call it a hot mess!

Not withstanding that: a caterpillar really can turn into a butterfly!

Thank you for taking the leap to post.

I also was drinking these 99-01 and it’s interesting to hear that they are still interesting. I’m invested too because I have an 01 Integrity which I’m never sure when to even try.

I would say, go for it! I doubt that it’s going to have an upside to wait any longer. I checed Cellar Tracker, and the last three notes on the 2001 Integrity can be summarized as it’s spectacular, it’s corked, and it’s cough syrup. No good wines, only good bottles… Pull the cork and let us know!

I drank a decent amount of Marquis Philips and Amon-Ra wines back in/around 1999 - 2002 and really remember enjoying them. This was a pleasant memory-jog. Thanks!

Eric Levine gave the cough syrup comment.
