I have a pretty good stash pre-1990 going back to 1959 TBAs.

I am a buyer of 2001 and older Kabinetts!

I am a drinker of 2001 and older kabinetts.

I’d love to see people post pics of their riesling collections. I need some eye candy to aspire to.

It would take awhile to photo as it is in two locations!

One less bottle thanks to a great cause, KP’s #wineloversagainstcorona

As you should! A 98 a few months back was just glorious! As you know older Prum Kabinetts never show up for sale.

Dang! Year of WWII ending.

Also, just saw the new auction lots on the Rieslingfeier page. Fareed Zakaria is a wine guy?

This drank SO well through day two…OMG that color!! flirtysmile

Anyone want to discuss the leakage?

Did it have notable leakage? I generally don’t worry about such things.

Well both bottles of the 01 spat had sticky leakage down the necks, and the Auslese was below the two in the rack, and had a droplet of sticky dried wine on it, but no leakage. Looks to be a very slow seepage and dried on the neck like sticky honey. Like I said in the tn, the cork was really spongy, but in one piece. I’ve seen a few tn’s talk about leakers in their rieslings?

German wines leak. Fact of life.

It was fairly common in Germany to slightly overfill the bottles before sealing so that naturally / often leads to some leakage, especially if filling and sealing occurred in a cold cellar.

Quick question: how do Kabinett wines evolve vs the higher pradikats? I would think that the more of that sweetness “buffer” you have to shed over the decades the better? Curious about taste and flavor as these Kabinett get into 20-30+ years territory… is it just a rarity thing because most are consumed young or do you guys get something special from them?

I keep a lot of Kabinett to age 20 and beyond. It’s lovely. It’s not just about sweetnesses receding, as the sweetness is the counterpoint to the acidity. Kabinett wines do evolve bottle age flavors on a quicker pace, but not in any lesser way than Spatlese or Auslese wines.

Absolutely. It is wide open and delicious, albeit still young.

Charcuterie board with stinky cheeses.

The oldest prum auslese i have had is the 1975 w.s. I bought two bottles off the old and rare list at schneiders in July 2000 for $60 each. Drank one that fall and the second one in april 2011 at a dinner party at my house with john gilman, Mark Golodetz (y’all know him, right), mark wessels, phil bernstein and craig ganzer. Here is John’s note on the bottle:

(Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese AP #4- Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm) The 1975 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese from J. J. Prüm is one of the most brilliant wines I have ever had the pleasure to taste from this great estate. The deep and utterly ethereal nose soars from the glass in a blaze of peach, orange, a touch of custard, beautiful, salty soil tones, a gentle dollop of honey, orange zest and an exotic, mossy topnote that reminds me a bit of the Herrenberg vineyard from Maximin Grünhäuser. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish, pure and very, very complex, with the lightness of step of a ballerina, beautiful focus and grip, bright acids and stunning length and grip on the absolutely à point finish. This is the epitome of elegance and transparent purity. (Drink between 2011-2040) 98 points

A lot depends on producer, vintage and storage. Prum’s wines age extremely well and a 2001 WS Kabinett I had a couple of months ago was outstanding. But then again, it had all three - outstanding producer, outstanding vintage and has been stored in a temperature controlled wine cellar pretty much since it was released.

I prefer Kabinett and Spatlese with age vs. Auslese. Had a 1961 Dr. Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten Kabinett with Ernie Loosen in his front yard in Bernkastel one day on a multi-day trip to Germany…still one of the best wines I have ever had to this day and made me cellar more Kabinett and Spatlese vs. the sweeter Prädikat’s my palate doesn’t favor especially in modern times where Kabinett and Spatlese can have Auslese must weights.
