TN: 2001 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny

  • 2001 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru (1/18/2014)
Popped and aired in the glass for 30 minutes. Medium ruby color. Ethereal nose of cherry blossom, black plum, alpine florals, schist, thyme, forest floor. Complex array of red and black fruit on the palate, high-toned and sweet at first then dropping a register and putting forth iron and flint notes which never became overwhelming. Balanced and light on its feet the whole evening, with a slow unveiling of second and third hits on the tongue. Ample acidity and integrated tannins to anchor the fruit. Long finish of red raspberry fruit with a delicate press of earth and iron filings. The last sips were the best. This is just a baby, but already capable of fireworks. (94 pts.)

This wine was an epiphany for me when I first started getting into burgundy.

Berry,

I am in good company!

Cheers,
Doug

Nice job, Doug!
I’ve been fortunate to drink some great Burgundy the last few years, but not much Musigny.
This sounds awesome. Cheers.

Dennis,

First Musigny for me. It was mighty good! In another 8-10 years it might be truly transcendent.

Regards,
Doug

Cool! The '02 Les Fuees was an epiphany Mugnier for me. I was already tuned into Burgundy but that '02 Fuees was a head turner! Wish I could afford to keep buying Mugnier! The '10 Marchales are my last planned buy.

Everyone needs to taste the Moose once. Mine was a 99 Musigny at a sub retail steal off a list in Chicago.

Craig,

I really like the C-M Fuees from Mugnier. Beautiful stuff and although quite pricey it’s a whole lot cheaper than the big moose.

Cheers,
Doug

I’ve never tasted Mugnier Moose, sadly way out of my price comfort zone now. Nice note, Doug.

I bought the '98-'01 for sub-$200. Those were the days.

Awesome! I bought the 01 Amoureuses for $160. My '99 Moose was $450 on a wine list in Chicago 5yrs ago for our 30th Anni. That’s the most I’ve paid for a wine. Loved it but really out of my range and just a fun one time splurge.

I have not had the big guns after 2000, when some say things changed greatly for the better, but in my experience of the wines before 01 my favourite is the village wine, the only one that transcends its label.

The 01 Moose was a watershed wine for me. The wholesaler here used to hold wine back until she thought it was ready to drink. Anyway at one point a bunch of Mugnier was released and I bought all I could. 99 thru 02 Moose. Village and some Amoureuses also. I grabbed 7 btls. of the 01 and drank one immediately.

No doubt! I think Meadows giving the 05 version of Musigny 99 points put the domain right in the crosshairs of the extremely wealthy collector types. The irony is that Mugnier doesn’t really make wine in a way that a lot of serious collectors really like.

Oh well, life goes on.

Bonnes Mares not good enough for you? [wink.gif]

Used to be a case buy until the 2005 came out.

Now, I don’t honestly care.

Still, the 2001 is my favorite of all his vintages I have had…a very good wine.

It’s priced in the stratosphere now which for all I know might be well-deserved. I have a few bottles of the more recent vintages but I will be in a nursing home when they come of age.

Cheers,
Doug
