TN: 2001 Frédéric Magnien Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes Vieilles Vignes

  • 2001 Frédéric Magnien Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru (9/5/2009)
I’m usually a big fan of Magnien’s wines, this one was a little difficult. There was definitely a lot going on here - the nose, palate and finish were all powerful and complex. However, it had a darker fruit profile than I typically expect from Burgundy. Perhaps a little too much extraction? Having said that there were aspects of this wine I really liked: I’m pretty sure whole cluster fermentation was used to some extent, (at least it tasted as such.) The nose had an herbal note which I found pleasant, (sage/thyme). The palate had an earthy profile. The finish went on forever. With plenty of structure the wine was more chunky than smooth. Not quite ready. Good not great. Never to be special… (89 pts.)

Did the bottle have a North Berkley Selection label on back? I find that the North Berkley bottles have too much oak, where the bottles with a premier cru import label or a french label can be tasty…

Indeed this was the North Berkeley version and yes there was probably a touch too much oak. Generally I like the North Berkeley Selections. Things may integrate a little better with time but I won’t hold my breath. This was good, just not great. Can’t win 'em all, I’m still a big fan of Freddie.

Cheers!
