2001 Feudi di San Gregorio Pàtrimo Campania IGT - Italy, Campania, Campania IGT (4/10/2011)
Very dark. Incredibly dark and brooding nose. If Vulcan had a house wine, this would be it. Maybe knowing the wine’s origin pushed me, but I swear there was volcanic ash and black almost basalt earth here. Among the fray, were dark stony fruit, blackberries, rocks, violets, and almost a black hole of a nose. Huge power and grace here, but still primal. This is the blackest Merlot I have encountered. Rich and very full bodied, powerful and brooding. I’ve had my fair share of huge wines, and they tend to leave me nonplussed, but in this case, this wine’s fantastic balance is what impresses me most. This is world class complicated and deep wine with a huge future. I drank this at least five years too soon. Beautiful stuff. 95+ pts (95 pts.)
