TN: 2001 Faustino Rioja Gran Reserva (Spain, La Rioja, Rioja)

  • 2001 Faustino Rioja Gran Reserva - Spain, La Rioja, Rioja (3/8/2014)
At age 13 I’m a tad worried about when the oak will better integrate? Opened about 2 hours before we started to drink it and had poured one glass in a Riedel BDX early after opening because it was very oaky when I popped the cork. The nose cleaned up fairly well but still a lot of vanilla on the palate. Little disapointed in light of Decanter’s 98pt score. Assume though that in the world of Rioja this is still an infant and that 3- 5 more years will help? Hope so, I went long on this and bought 4 btls. Otherwise, there seems to be some interesting dried fruit and spice submerged in the oak. The color is youthfully dark garnet. I’ll try my next one in 3yrs. (89 pts.)

Thanks for the check in, Craig.
I bought a few on a whim from Envoyer.
I would think this has some years in it, so your 3 years (and more) is probably the way to go.
I had a '96 a couple years ago that was great and still just unfolding. fwiw
