TN: 2001 Domaine Leroy Savigny-les-Beaune Les Narbantons

Medium ruby and starting to brick. Intense nose of damp earth, red berries, game, cinnamon and cloves. The spice components became more pronounced after an hour.
Refined, silky and balanced, this stains the palate with spicy fruit and a lingering finish. The aromatics and texture of this reminded me of the 2000 Leroy Romanee St. Vivant drunk a few months ago. A superb showing for this atypical Savigny, which some used to consider a real Burgundy insider’s wine and the best value in the Leroy portfolio. Alas, no longer.

not sure it has been since the 1990 vintage, when three bottles purchased prearrival cost me all of $90 - for the three.

But thanks for the note on this one. For some reason I own two of them.

Thanks for the note. I had this wine around four years ago nd it was young, but delicious, as you describe your bottle. A second bottle a year ago, on the heels of a stunning '01 Leroy Vosne les Genevrieres, was less impressive and entirely closed. Glad to hear it may be coming back to life.

What a deal. Bought mine off the shelf for $45. It’s a fabulous bottle. Around 2002, Charlie Trotter’s had this for $90, one of the better bargains on his list. Over a number of visits, we drank every one of them.

This is an incredibly nice wine.
I blew through mine because they were so tasty.
Well above pedigree IMHO.
Thanks for the note.

Aside from prohibitively-priced Dom. Leroy, who is doing good things in Savigny-les-Beaune?

Simon Bize, Jean-Marc Pavelot and Maurice Ecard.

Do you have experience with Dom. Maurice Ecard under the new ownership (2005 vintage forward, I believe)?

Unfortunately not. Last vintages of Ecard I drank were the '99 and '02 Narbantons and '02 Peuillets, all of which were spectacular, bursting with fruit and very balanced.
