2001 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée- France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (10/24/2009)
Decanted 2 hours, consumed with a dinner of porterhouse steaks served with bordelaise sauce, baked potatoes and spinach salad. Wet earth, leather on the nose. Wonderful mouthfeel, texture and balance. Sharp, rich, fresh, spicy. Very enjoyable and a great pairing with the meal.
I would definitely open one. Give it some air, as I poured about 1/2 a glass before decanting. That 1/2 glass was nice, showed very typical Pégaü flavors and aromas, but in a very muted way. Two hours in the decanter helped this show very well.
Rob Klafter generously brought a mag of this to my 40th last week. It was lovely. Still needs time, but it drank very well. Lyle thought the brett was too much, and those who don’t care for that profile would agree, but it hit all my buttons.
