2001 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru (11/8/2014)
First experience with Bonnes Mares. Medium ruby color. Potent nose of juniper berry, violets, blackberry, red raspberry, stone, and dense earth. Lithe, sinewy layers of black raspberry, pulpy red raspberry, iron filings, cinnamon, and a bit of meatiness coursing on the palate with seamlessness and exuberance. Lovely acidity and serious but integrated tannins leading to a long finish of lively red and black fruit cut with rock and grip. Wow, a first class wine caught in early adolescence brimming with freshness and strength. (93 pts.)

Doug–I had this within the past year as part of a 2001 tasting, and had a similar take (although I didn’t get pulpy red raspberries). I was worried that it would be way too young and be closed, but although it is still quite young, it was open enough to be accessible and quite enjoyable.
Hi John,
Glad yours showed well too. That pulpy thing is something I’ve come to associate with youthfulness in a wine, and in this case added interest and enjoyment to the experience (has been dominant and searing in other wines). Ironic to be noting this in a 13 year old bottle but I’m sure it has years/decades to go.
Cheers,
Doug
The 2001 Vogue wines were an absolute success across the board. The Musigny remains one of my real favorites. This Bonne Mares sounds great.

Good to hear. Glad to know my inaugural bottle of Bonnes Mares was from a good vintage for this house (which it certainly was).
Cheers,
Doug
