2001 Arcadian Syrah Robert O. Fleming Cuvée Garys’ Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands (10/17/2010)
Ok, I get the Gary’s grapefruit thing but this was grapefruit juice. Decanted and drunk over 3 1/2 hours it was grapefruit juice. Did I mention grapefruit juice? Hour four it took on a little more complexity and interest. Still it was hot and and tannic with an acidic finish. Either this needs way more time (either in the decanter or in the bottle) or I’m not gettin’ it. Not really my cuppa. (83 pts.)

Mark,
Your post has prompted me to pull a bottle of this wine to revisit. And my apologies for your experience this wine is much better than that at least it was when I had it last year.
Perhaps others who have this in their cellar can take a crack and share their impressions?
Thanks Joe. I look forward to your and other’s impressions.
I’ve only had the 03, and it not like this either.
I opened a bottle this past February and it was wonderful. Nothing like Mike’s experience and hands down the best syrah I have had from Garys’ vineyard. Grapefruit juice, hot, tannic and acidic…sure sounds like all the signs of a bad bottle. I still have 2 in the cellar and 1 pending so I’ll wait to see what Joe’s experience is before deciding when to open another.
Tomorrow night I will have some Syrah producers get together to taste this with me and seek their honest opinion.
Joe,
I still think this one is one of your very best as I did when I first tasted it before it was released. It has just gotten better.
Never had one that was stripped out like this but I would bet an off bottle.
Maybe low level TCA stripping the fruit.
I only have a few left but when I get a chance we will take it for a test drive.
Inconsistent with my experiences of the very fine 01 Garys’, my favorite of Joe’s vintages of this. I’ve had 3 bottles in last 2 years, FWIW. None like Mark’s. Bad bottle I’d say. Happy I’ve got a few to go.
Geez, sounds like it had to have been an off bottle. The description reminds me of a Syrah bottling from André Brunel, of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s Les Cailloux, that was imported here for a vintage or two in the mid-Nineties. I think it was called Les Boréales. My two bottles tasted like spoiled orange juice; some sort of awfulness had happened to them, maybe post-bottling.
Mark,
At the obvious risk of sounding self serving we opened a bottle of the 2001 Arcadian Syrah Robert O. Fleming Cuvee Garys’ Vineyard and it was nothing like you reported.
It has softened up and is now quite round but all of the components have come together. I found it to be a delicious wine.
Perhaps our paths will cross and we will share this wine together.
Thanks for checking it out Joe. I have a couple more so will check in again sometime soon. Perhaps a bad bottle?
Let me know next time you’re on Oahu.
Let me know if you’re anywhere near Atlanta, Mark, and I’ll open a magnum.
Best,
Bob

I also have doubts about this bottle and I’m near Atlanta. Often. ![tease [tease.gif]](/uploads/db3686/original/2X/c/c5b32b76bebaa359b0452ae247b61189ffe5fa7e.gif)
I have no doubts, but I need to make it to The ATL to see Bowden.
