TN 2000 Pichon Lalande

Probably superfluous to write this, but really enjoyed this.
Had it with steak (American Wagyu), roasted potatoes, and green salad. After two hours in a decanter, just terrific! Elegant, velvety, long finish. Nose of tobacco, leather, cassis, dark fruits. Glad I have 5 more but wish I had 50. Will go a ways yet, and it may improve, but it is terrific now.

Was pleasantly surprised by this wine this year.

Managed to pick up some more recently

I remember shortly after the 2000s were delivered a large contingent of NYC area winegeeks had a big dinner with about maybe 15 of the wines- I think no First, but a good selection of classed growths. At some point Mark Golodetz stood up and did a poll of the room, as there was disagreement at his table about the Pichon Lalande. Basically a third of the room thought there was an unpleasant green note, a third thought it green herby in a good way, and a third said “what green”? I was in the I taste it, but like it camp. The assumption was that it was the petit verdot that stood out. Sounds like it has integrated well, which has been my impression,

I had a glass that I used to taste the wine right after I put it in the decanter. When I came back to the glass after two hours, I noted a hint of green bell pepper. I mentioned it to my wife but neither of us noted it in the wine from the decanter for the rest of the meal. So maybe you can find it if you are looking for it/sensitive to it, but if so, feel free to send all your bottles to me for proper disposal. :joy:

I certainly liked the wine (of course I like Loire reds and Sociando) and expect I’d like more today. But I thought it was interesting at the time because I thought it was an example of the likely physiological differences in our takes (like people react to cilantro).

PLL is noted for a greenness. A good green in my view

popped another over the weekend. After about an hour, was thinking this bottle wasn’t close to being ready. Just a lot of oak. At 2 hours, not much movement. At 3 hours, holy crap did this do a 180. Of course the last glass was the best. May give the 82 a run soon. Love this wine. Probably my favorite 2000

You rang!?!

Love this wine!

Nice. And comparisons to the 82, wow!

Ok, opened up a bottle of this last week. Second bottle of a case I bought on release, the first bottle shortly after purchase. I have drunk a fair amount of Pichon Lalande but probably no other 00’s. Now I can handle a bit of green, rather enjoy it, know it is a trait. But this was a pyrazine party in a bottle, could smell it, from the second I popped the cork. My wife agreed. Into a decanter for an hour or so and followed it for a few hours and never really settled down…calmed down a bit day two but was never really what I’d call enjoyable. Guess I’ll just open another soon,

Sounds like it’s time to stand one of these up. I like green, and I love the levels found in good vintages of Pichon Comtesse, but not crushed stink-bug or ladybug levels of pyrazines.

OK, yes, there is a decent hit of leafy green in this wine. A definite plus for me. Medium body, just beginning tertiary complexity. Lovely classic Bordeaux and a great match for a boneless lamb loin roast.

Thanks for the update, I’ll be opening another soon. As mentioned I enjoy a bit of green myself but that bottle was way out of bounds. Cheers!
