TN: 2000 Chateau Sociando Mallet Cuvee Jean Gautreau [9.27.2025 note added]

Just had this wine again with a wonderful lamb chop dish. I was thinking about what I wanted to say, jumped on the site to check out the last notes, and found my own, lol. And pretty much what I wanted to say. And clearly more coherent than I am now. Or buzzed.

This wine is excellent but still young. I’d probably give it another 3-5 years. It is fleshing out nicely, however. Like an old Togni Cab, has a very pungent nose of ripe bell pepper, wet earth and dark fruit and bramble. Big coating mouth presence, quite large-scaled but not heavy. Just big Cab. Tannins remains robust. Long chewy finish. Excellent.

I had the 2001 Sociando JG last week. I give the 2001 an edge still over 2000 on the JG, and a couple points more on the normale. The pyrazine note is present in the 2000 JG but not as overpowering as it can be in some bottles of the 2000 normale.

@JustinP you motivated me to open this wine tonight! I know my doppelgänger buddy @Julian_Marshall loves this stuff!
