- 2000 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (2/12/2025)
After a badly corked bottle several weeks ago, this was a godsend. What a fantastic bottle of Bordeaux. It's by no means fully mature, but it's in a fantastic drinking spot now, with touches of cedar and earth accenting the still robust, dark fruit, and that coffee note that always says Lagrange to me. Tannins are in perfect balance, so with the strength of the fruit I think this can go at least 10-20 more years before even starting to decline.
Lagrange has a way of settling into itself over time, revealing layers that feel both deliberate and effortless. That quiet interplay of cedar, earth, and dark fruit is what makes it worth revisiting, even after the occasional disappointment. As you noted, the coffee is distinct and certainly keeps me returning to Lagrange with regularity. When it’s right, it reminds you why patience with Bordeaux is rarely wasted.
I used to pound late 90’s vintages of Les Fiefs de Lagrange on release. Under $20, sometimes under $15. Great value. Never see it anymore. Probably $45.
I think most of it is in my dad’s cellar.
Les Fiefs is widely available for <$30 in my area. (Illinois) Probably one of my most frequently consumed wines. And yeah, they’re still a good candidate for pounding.
