TN: 1999 Travaglini Gattinara

1999 Travaglini Gattinara - Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Gattinara (1/17/2011)
Pop & pour. Classic mature Nebbiolo nose of roses, tar, and forest floor. Silky in the mouth with smooth tannins and medium length. Somewhat drying on the finish. A lovely wine to drink tonight and for at least the next 5-8 years. For those who want to know some of what Nebbiolo has to offer without spending a lot of money or waiting decades for wines to mature, give this wine a try. (91 pts.)

Love this wine. Thanks for the notes.

Ken,

Have you had the '01 Riserva? If you have what’s your opinion on its drink window?

It’s shed enough tannin by now that you can get a peek in for educational value, but it really needs another decade or two, closer to two.

The `03 was one of my WOTY. a couple of years back.

Cool. I’ll put in the back corner for 15 years, or so. Thanks. [basic-smile.gif]

If you can figure out a way to store those crazy bottles.

FWIW, the PA State Store has the 04 Gattinara normale for $30 and the 04 riserva for $40.

I drank the 01 “Tre Vigne” a few months ago and it was fabulous and still youthful. dc.

I think there’s a crazy fucked-up warped corner of the cellar wall that it will fit up next to quite nicely … yeah, these bottles suck.

C’mon, they fit just fine and this are mags by the way [cheers.gif]
