TN: 1999 Roagna Barbaresco Paje (Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco)

  • 1999 Roagna Barbaresco Paje - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco (6/13/2014)
Popped and poured. Darker ruby. Nose of violets and roses atop deeper scents of fecund soil and asphalt. Dense and coiled on the palate, but plenty concentrated and already paying out detailed layers of black plum and bing cherry fruit laced with tar and earth notes. Firm, fine-grained tannins and moderate acidity leading to a sweet, grippy finish of medium length. A beautiful showing, but just a hint of what is to come. From a 375. (91 pts.)

I bought a few of these. Not planning on touching for a while. Thanks for the note.

Yeah, with the caveat that mine are 750’s, so you don’t really know how much more advanced/developed the 375 is, I really haven’t tried either my '96’s or '99’s yet. The last time I tried a '98 (November), I still thought that was pretty primary and going to be better in a few years.

That said, as Paul already mentioned, thanks for the “check-in”. [cheers.gif]

Love Roagna, too bad the prices have gone up so much in recent years.

Was kind of fun to see what was going on; have a 750 left which will sleep for a long while. Pricing was indeed quite fair for this bottle.

Cheers,
Doug

This is a new wine to me, but we enjoyed the 2007 off the list at Sorellina in Boston in December. Brought a bottle of the same to Tra Vigne in St. Helena for a memorable evening, just a couple of weeks ago. Young, yes, but delicious when paired with housemade-to-order mozzarella to start, followed by pasta with rabbit ragu. I don’t know if this bottle here in my cellar will stay there long…

Sounds promising. If I remember correctly this house releases somewhat late so the 07’s may be the most recent vintage out there. I just happened upon some 2004’s, which I hope will sleep undisturbed for a while.

Cheers,
Doug
