TN: 1999 Mommessin Clos de Tart (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru)

Figured we needed more burgundy tasting notes. Will have a note on another few goodies tmrw.

In between my grilling duties on the Terrace of Dr. Wu’s pad I was browsing his wine selection when I came upon this wine. I believe Major Franks mentioned that he never tried a CDT so the kind dr. opened it up for us to drink. Sorry for the lack of notes on the nose… all I could smell was Flannery . This wine is totally not a sham, maybe they changed something in the 2000’s but this was a great example of very good burgundy.

pop and pour. Death defying young. Everything about this wine is suppressed and waiting to burst out. This is an extraordinary example of fresh and lively burgundy, even though it is closed you can tell that it’s pushing to fight it’s way through. There’s an elegance in the pure fruit that’s able to shine through accompanied by (pardon the pun) a tart red fruit mid palate. I followed it for about 45 minutes and the acid really starts to build up and form a nice backbone for the wine but it was still quite tight all throughout that time. The wine isn’t disjointed, there’s no overwhelming presence of any flaws of over-oak/alcohol so I think it has a very very bright future.

Do not open!!! leave this wine be and forget about it in your cellar!

Great note Charlie. This wine is definitely in a deep sleep but the potential in 10+ years is incredible due to the fruit and underlying structure it showed. This wine will be very long lived…

agreed! might have to hunt some down and lock it away

I totatly agree with what you both said. I’d love to have a few bottles to stuff far, far away in the cellar.

at least you have a cellar, I just have boxes :frowning:

Move out of your Mom’s house. [stirthepothal.gif]

Thanks Charlie.
I must admit that I am not the biggest fan of the recent CdT style. I bought several vintages of the late '90s Clos de Tarts. With age the oak has moderated but the wines are left with a muddled texture and they lack distinctiveness. IMO, they taste a lot like a genre of CA Pinot that I am not particularly fond of (high oak and high alc).

I am still hopeful for the '98 and '01, but fear that this producer is not my style.

I think they built a new winery and implemented some quality changes for the 1999 vintage. So it has gained a better reputation since then. Unfortunately, the prices have increased accordingly!
