Well, this clearly needed more than the 2 hour decant I gave it. Shows some tar and floral elements and a red fruited core, but it is pretty cloaked by structure still. Sound and correct, and popped a good bit with my lamb schwarma and duck fat fries and truffle mayo. However, still didn’t hit the heights. Long, powerful, drying finish. For me, this needs way longer decant and just more time. Or perhaps, it’s just not a winner in '99 as CT notes would have one believe. Saved half bottle for night two, will see what we get.

Dennis,
I had one a few years ago, and have quite a few older vintages. Very traditional; acid and tannins, needs a ton of time to open. I’m curious how this shows on night two. Ours needed a lot of time.
Cheers,
Warren

Thanks, Warren. I’ve also had good luck with older bottles. '68 and '70 last xmas season were stellar and '58 a few years back put me on the path. I’ve had the '96 and '98 in recent history and both showed a little better than this one, with less age.
We’ll see tonight!

Really hadn’t moved much on night 2. Tight, brisk acidity, still very structured. And/Or just not great.
