1999 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru (12/21/2009)
Today, thanks to CellarTracker, I was nominated by Dr. Vino as one of the finalists for the category of a wine person who most epitomizes the decade of the Naughties (2000-2009). And while I don’t think I will win, as of this moment I have twice as many votes as the next-closest competitor. OK, that gets a huge WTF from me?!?!?
Wanting to revel in the moment and just getting over a cold that has had me dry for the past several days, I was in the mood for something yummy. With a nicely roasted chicken getting crispy brown in the oven, this bottle of Burg sang out to me. It was troubling to pull the capsule and find a lot of dried wine, a slight leaker, followed by a very wet cork that came out much too easily. Cooked I wondered? Well I poured a glass and any concerns melted in a heartbeat. This shimmering, translucent wine offers a huge explosion of cherries and soil, simply EXPLODING from the glass. What a freaking gorgeous nose! Underlying those element is that sort of twangy Pinot stink, sous bois and a hint of mushroom, mmmm pure umami in a glass. On a fresh pour this is actually showing some sulfur notes too, but those blow off very quickly with a few swirls of the glass. Why don’t I drink Burgundy more often? This wine is insidiously, dangerously, seductively sexy. Evil temptress of a wine.
Ahh, the palate simply explodes with cherries and hints of ripe strawberries and balsamic. This is juicy, supple, mouthwatering and very fresh, in fact utterly delicious. Still showing some oak with a faintly peppery and smokey note on the finish, yet this is well moderated by the ebullient fruit and acidity. A surprisingly fruit forward wine at 10 years of age. Barcode #000601 from my original cellar of 800 bottles when I fired up CellarTracker in 2003, at $45 in 2002, I shudder to think what it would cost to find a similar bottle now. If there is one bad thing about the last decade of wine it is where the prices have gone. Anyway, if you have them, now seems like quite a nice time to enjoy them. This is lovely. (93 pts.)
