TN: 1999 Château Palmer (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux)

CT notes seemed to imply a 2 hour decant was sufficient. That was so wrong… excellent wine if properly prepped.

The bottle was in pristine condition and the cork appeared brand new. On opening, the wine was acidic and underweight, begging for air. It gained some weight with time, and I started sipping on it around hour 4. Beguiling aromas and flavors with black plums and black cherries accentuated by licorice, cloves, earth, leather, smoke, cocoa powder, espresso and mushroom. Plenty of structure remains to continue aging with elevated acid and plenty of tannin left which came across as a bit sharp. The finish is long and super spicy. Suddenly with my last glass at the 8 hour mark, the wine hit another gear. The fruit gained weight melding with all the tertiary notes, a dusting of green herbs emerged, the tannins softened, and the acidity integrated into the fruit. Lesson learned – next time, I’m decanting 8-12 hours! (94 points)

Yes, your TNote seems correct as I had this 18 months ago and it was shockingly young. The '89 is wonderful right now, so hoping the '99 gets close in 10 years.

Glad to hear that as I happen to have an '89 as well, which I’ve never tried.

The 1989 on song is brilliant, but I have had a disproportionate number of corked bottles. I actually stopped buying it, as at a guess around a third showed greater or lesser signs of TCA.
