1999 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape- France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (6/19/2009)
I haven’t had this in about four years, and it has come along nicely. Meaty notes on the nose, reticent. The palate shows good acidity, tart cherry and dry Provencale herbs. With food it gains a lot of weight and intensity. A lighter scaled Beaucastel, it is starting to remind me of the 1994. I think it needs about five more years to get to prime drinking. (90 pts.)
Nice! Had to call you out on it, but it was worth it!
As I mentioned on FB, I’m thankful for the 5 year comment - I’ll gladly wait on the 3 bottles I have, and almost opened one yesterday evening, as a matter of fact…
Nice note Eric. I think this batch of the 98-01 Beaucastel’s are in a funny spot right now. The 98 might just start hitting its drinking window soon but every time I have the 99 and more so the 00 they are rather closed.
Ed, I flirted with 91 points, but I have had a lot of Beau from a lot of vintages, so I have to keep this one in perspective. I greatly prefer the 1998 to this, but I appreciate the 1999 for what it has to offer.
eric
what does the 94 cost in the states?
we have been seeing a lot of it here in london lately around gbp24-27 per bottle and for that money it has been a very lovely drink
i am always generous with the 99’s as my twins were born in 99
like the beaucastel but this thurs am having 99 chave hermitage, love his wines
p.s no i am not sharing the chave with the kids yet
Eric, I am surprised about your comparison to the 1994. To me the 1994 is much more rustic and traditional in style whereas the 1999, to me, seems more polished - almost modern. Or maybe the 1999 is just too young. See separate note I posted from CT - didn’t know how to copy it in to this thread.
