TN: 1998 Greenock Creek Shiraz Apricot Block

I’ve always associated Greenock Creek as a bit of a Parker phenomenon, albeit one that Australians are at least somewhat familiar with. Color me surprised by this lovely bottle of old fashioned Barossa Shiraz.

Beautiful, slightly high toned, nose of roses, tar, damp earth (a little manure), and cigar box.

Old fashioned claret-like Barossa shiraz. Dense black and red fruits. Dusty cherry and black plums. Very well balanced with crisp acidity carrying the fruit through the long palate. Late tannin grip. Warm but not hot (note 13.3% ABV). (92 pts.)

And another 1998 probably more followed in the US at the time than Australia. Less successful.

  • 1998 Warrenmang Shiraz - Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Pyrenees (11/17/2016)
    Dark red velvet color.

Nose of pine-sol, vanilla essence and liqueur.

Big rich wine. Lots of glycerine on the palate with very ripe raspberries and black grapes. Slightly spirity finish. Shows very young… probably hasn’t budged much from it’s younger years (although i don’t have experience of this when young). Not really my style, but probably quite good in its style. (84 pts.)
