TN: 1998 Château L'Evangile

1998 Château L’Evangile

Bordeaux&Steak is always a perfect combination. Solo this Pomerol was too big/rich for my tastebuds, but with the meat everything came together. Velvety texture with flavors of blackberry and black chocolate. Of course very very charming. Still quite young from Magnum.

Fair to say I look more for finesse&elegance and red fruit these days.

Thanks for the note.

Had this last year, also with a ribeye. A fantastic, but hedonistic, bottle of wine. Loved every minute of it, but as you note, with the meal.

Surprised to hear it is that opulent as with that kind of note I would normally avoid the wine. But a bottle I had in a 1998 Right Bank tasting was probably at the riper end of the group, but definitely not over the top.

I have to confess that I have problems with BIG wines. but no doubt quite hedonistic the Evangile.

BTW, on Xmas I had a Chateau La Croix 2018 from Pomerol which was more suitable to my palate with its finesse&elegance and still clearly a Pomerol.

You would have liked the red-fruited 2011 Trotanoy that I had earlier this week. Quite lovely.

Martin,
I am no fan of big wines either; it’s just that I just don’t think of L’Evangile 1998 as being particularly large. But you have given me an excuse to try a bottle in the near future.

BTW, the Figeac which I really love is also unusually rich for them in 1998, and it’s one of their most successful vintages.

Interesting Mark, as I am a big fan of Ch. Figeac thanks to Panos Kakaviatos. And don`t forget it was a Magnum.
