TN: 1997 Mount Veeder Winery Cabernet Sauvignon

  • 1997 Mount Veeder Winery Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley (1/19/2009)
Mature but not old. Color remains deep and consistent. Dark berry fruit flavors are receeding leaving a pleasant melange of flavor/aromas like opening the door to your spice rack, soy, pencil lead, worn leather, and wood smoke. While there’s probably no rush, it’s time to drink. (88 pts.)

The '97 Napa cabs I am drinking seem to be in a weird space now. They were supposed to be among the better vintages, but I’m starting to think, perhaps more urgently than you, that these wines need to be consumed in the immediate future.

Thanks for the note Randy. Mount Veeder was one of the few decent Napa Cab labels, along with Franciscan, that made it down to the Dominican Republic during my formative years. Always recalled it as a pretty tight and austere rendition of Napa juice. Soft spot for it in my heart.
