TN: 1997 Calera Pinot Noir Selleck (USA, California, Central Coast, Mount Harlan)

Birthday wine! No decanting, but opened and took a sip then let is sit in the open bottle all afternoon before carefully pouring (there is sediment). A bit past peak but we are really enjoying it.

Brick red with a paling rim. Good core of red plums and eucalyptus on the nose, very vibrant, a touch of earth with moderate complexity. More earthy on the palate, with juicy red fruits balanced against vanilla and eucalyptus. Light and mostly resolved tannins, good acidity. Slightly hot on the finish-- is it fading? Probably. Still a lovely example of nearly 18 year old California Pinot. (90 pts.)

Peter, thx for the note and Happy (belated) Birthday!

I have exactly 1 bottle of Calera Selleck, the 2004, thinking it might need to be opened the next time something worth celebrating comes up. People always say Calera is one to hold onto, not so sure if that’s the best thing to do with any CA Pinot from a warm vintage…and I’m pretty sure 2004 was a lot warmer than 1997.

Alex, this wine drank well 10 yrs ago. I’m sure your 2004 is ready.
