1997 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d’Alba - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (12/20/2014)
I opened this wine straight out of the cellar. After pouring a small glass, I decided to decant into a small base decanter to both remove sediment and allow a bit of air. For the first twenty minutes or so, the wine gave off the typical nebbiolo aromatics but not a whole lot else. For the next hour the wine yielded little of interest other than a lot of acid. Sometime around 90-120 minutes of air, the wine transformed into a beauty. At 2.5 hours after decanting, the wine offered dried roses, dry earth, strawberry, cherry, and hints of worn leather. A sip of the wine offered immediate fruits, mostly cherry and strawberry. Upon further contemplation, tar and mushrooms also arose out of the mix. The acidity was clear and bright throughout and the finish was impressively long. (93 pts.)
