Major bummer, brought to a sushi date with my wife. Ended up drinking beer.
Sourced from the same place that got me the wonderful ‘89 Meyney that I raved about this past week. Bottle otherwise appeared immaculate. Cork was secure and was solid. Concerned on first pour as looked like a maturing Sauternes. Maderized aroma and worse on taste. Worsened over an hour while I enjoined a killer craft beer. Later pitched.
If you got it, pop one soon to check in.
Ok so now fellow Berserker MarcF tells me this wine saw room temperature, low 70s, for a period of its life. I’d still check on it. The retailer had a change in ownership. Everything else I have purchased from there has been excellent, including a mature Brunello that a buddy of mine just bought.
Just know that white Bordeaux isn’t immune. I had 3 or 4 spectacular bottles of 2006 SHL…and one that was clearly premoxed. Sorry this one didn’t turn out as you would have hoped.
All the best for 2018, Bob

I don’t know that SHL was killing it with whites back in 1996, like they are nowadays.
Along with the fact that a 21 year old wine can’t be prematurely oxidized…its just oxidized.
Bordeaux blanc and Rhône whites premox as often as white Burgs, I just think we all drink and hear about so few of the former that we don’t realize it.
I’ve had '01 SHL blanc that have been darker…I won’t buy again.
Also recently had 2 bottles of ‘01 that seemed much too mature and dark for the vintage.
