A crypt wine worthy of its own thread.
- 1996 Opus One - USA, California, Napa Valley (3/20/2025)
Half bottle opened to accompany a lamb course of a tasting menu, it only needed ten minutes to blossom into a beautiful, classic Napa Bordeaux blend. Oak had integrated, tannins mellowed, and the fruit was in the dark cassis range, rather than anything plummy or jammy. It was in a fantastic place, much like many 1996 Napa Bordeaux variety wines that I have opened the last two years.

I miss Opus! Along with Caymus SS, the greatest wines I would drink in the early days of my obsession mid 90’s. The 92 and 94 Opus…OMG good! I ended up selling most of my collection…totally regret it.

Awesome note! 1996 is one of my favorite CA vintages from the 1990’s and im a big fan of how many of them have aged

Same here. The 1996 Beringer PR Cab and Merlot, as well as Montelena and Insignia have all shown very well for me in the last 2 years.
