TN: 1996 M. Chapoutier Côte-Rôtie La Mordorée

  • 1996 M. Chapoutier Côte-Rôtie La Mordorée - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie (2/6/2010)
nose: lovely nose that is a bit reticent at first, but opens up with some swirling revealing pretty tones of raspberry compote, purple florals, white pepper, dark red fruits and some roasted herbs. Great balance with a real perfumed quality to the wine

taste: good tannins are still very present with a medium/full feel and good medium+ acidity with balanced tones of raspberries, roast herbs, white pepper, loads of spices and some floral bits with some perfumes and incense hitting on the back end

overall: This received about an hour decant before drinking. It’s still opening up well as I’m drinking it, and at about 90 minutes in the decanter its starting to hit a sweet spot. Has a nice ruby red color to it with a slight bit of browning at the rim. Lovely and can certainly age further as its coming off as just starting to fully drink (93 pts.)

Nice to hear yours was good. Unfortunately I had an 05’ last year that was corked…wet cement [cray.gif]

Hello Keith,

You didn’t find the acidity a tad harsh in this wine? I admit it has been a few years since I last tried this, but I recall it suffering from 1996-syndrome; which is to say the acid levels are just too high for the wine to ever be balanced. I’ve had so many Rhone wines and Burgundies that have had this raised acid level to the point of making many of them not terribly nice to drink.

Of course, 1996 syndrome worked a treat for the Champagnes of that vintage (oh and German Rieslings, too).

Cheers,
David.

I had this about 2-3 years ago and it stunk.

Good to hear that it is showing better.

Great notes Keith.
But, are you sure that this wine didn’t suck…

david- the acidity didn’t seem to be a problem on this wine saturday. I certainly know what you mean by the 96 acidity as it too has essentially rendered some red burgs hard to drink
