1996 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru (8/17/2013)
Popped and poured then consumed over 2 hours. Light ruby color. Nose of fecund soil and cinnamon, with lighter floral notes, raspberry, and licorice smells mixed in. Very fine-grained texture on the palate with meaty, briary red and black fruit layering out commandingly with each sip. Lighter body but dense and coiled with moderate acidity (not what I expected in a 1996) and quite filed-off tannins. Longer finish of red plum and earth. Presently showing loads of character on a lighter frame, this is probably nowhere near its maximum potential. (93 pts.)

Hi Doug,
Nice note! Jeremy was kind enough to pull a 375 of this for our group to taste when we visited Dujac in April. Your note takes me back to the wine - I also noted the wine being light on its feet with nice acids. From our sample and your note, I think I felt the wine was closer to maturity than you indicate, but our sample was from a 375.
Cheers,
Blair
Blair,
That must have been a great experience, tasting the wine on site with the winemaker’s son. How generous.
My thoughts on maturity certainly could be taken with a grain of salt since I am still learning about the 1996 vintage and when to drink the wines. Good to know you had a favorable showing also.
Cheers,
Doug
Got it in magnum. Will take my eyes off of it for a bit. Or, alternatively, I could Coravin the shit out of it!
Jim,
Now that would be a hard choice. Although I might wait.
Best,
Doug
Doug, all bottles of Dujac in the Seattle area are supposed to be opened with me.
Thanks for the note Doug. I plan on including this one in a CdlR vertical in October.
Best Regards
Jeremy
Chuck,
Yikes, I forgot!
Got a 2002 somewhere around here (and you are most welcome)…
Jeremy,
I had a sudden thought that I might be in the neighborhood.
Seriously, I hope the vertical makes it into an issue of Repast.
Cheers,
Doug
Was this an original bottle, or a bottle from the recent library release from the Domaine?
Always loved the wine although I have a slight preference for the Clos st. Denis.
Justin
I bought this bottle from a retailer this past year with unknown provenance.
Mark,
I am still looking forward to my first bottle of Dujac Clos St Denis.
Cheers,
Doug
Importer strip label would likely offer a clue. If you ever find yourself in Olympia and thirsty I have '96 CSD in the cellar.
Justin,
A generous offer. Thank you.
Cheers,
Doug
