TN: 1996 Alban Vineyards Roussanne Estate (USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley)

  • 1996 Alban Vineyards Roussanne Estate - USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley (2/22/2010)
Very cloudy and dark golden yellow, waves of sediment float through the bottle. Still rich apricot, baked apple, fig fruit…smoky hazelnut butter, almond oil, match strike, exotic spices, still with slight bitter citrus acidity. As with the age, it does have a little oxidative sherry to it, but that’s totally acceptable for this wine. Classic aged Alban Roussanne…with no problem going even longer. (93 pts.)

Wow, never heard of drinking such an aged Alban white. My whites from John usually don’t see more than five years or so of age before consumption.

Nice note. Glad to hear this is holding up so well.

Thanks for bringing that Brian. You knew I would appreciate it. By the way. The Alban “Heavyweight” I have is a '98 and it is a Vioginer.

If you want to do an Alban tasting, I have 97-99 Reva and Lorraine, 99 Grenache, and 99 Roussanne. Several of each.

Between the two of us, we could put together a hell-of-a tasting! We’ll plan one soon!

Btw, thanks for bringing the 1987 Mondavi Res. That was drinking perfectly for aged cab imo. Wish I could have spent more time with it,…so much wine!
