1995 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Estate - USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena (10/8/2014)
This is still 5 years away from its fullest potential. It’s easier to say that in the company of a fully mature, a point 1991 Dominus served just prior, as one gets serious confirmation as to what’s possible given time and proper raw materials. More medium-bodied than full, thanks to plenty of fresh acids, this nonetheless also has the fruit and tannins required for another 5 (min) or 10 (max?) years of ageing that’s needed to get past its secondary qualities and bloom in the tertiary stage where the entire effort will become more clear, purposeful and enjoyable; to my palate, anyway. ABV not listed on bottle, though it’s fully integrated at this stage. recommended
Aerated to decanter for sediment, immediately returned to bottle and Audozed 7 hours, served non-blind. If you’re opening one anytime soon, I strongly recommend 2 hours of aeration in decanter as the last glass had significantly improved over the first one (which was pretty, but also somewhat simple), with it eventually revealing a bright, vivid explosion of red fruits, spice and floral perfumes.
