TN: 1995 Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella

  • 1995 Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella - Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella (12/1/2012)
Decanted for one hour. Dark magenta hue. Nose of sweet plum, violets, earth, licorice. On the palate a wine of exceptional purity, with layer upon layer of sweet, deeply concentrated red and purple plum fruit just barely kept in check by tar and asphalt notes. Moderate acidity and fierce but managed tannins. Long, memorable finish of damson plum, leather, and grip. Powerful but not hot, exhibiting a sense of grandeur and gracefulness despite its 15% alcohol. Still very young, this wine will age for decades; it has not developed any tertiary elements even now! This wine will be legendary one day.

Peter,

I would agree with you. Although the wine was incredible on this particular showing, it was not by any means at or near peak.

I had read earlier that Giuseppe Quintarelli passed away in January. What an amazing legacy he leaves behind.

Cheers,
Doug

His Riservas are even greater. The most increadable mouthfeel of any wine.

Eric,

Sounds awesome. The texture of this wine (non-Riserva) was pretty amazing. Can’t imagine what his Riserva would taste like.

Cheers,
Doug

See what happens when you click “reply” too quickly? I thought we were talking about the Riserva, which is mind-blowing and the last wine done completely by Giuseppe. THAT wine will be legendary if it is not already, the regular bottling will remain merely awesome.

Peter,

That Riserva would be worth searching for, certainly, for its historical importance alone.

And yes, the regular bottling was pretty awesome. Unfortunately, it was my last bottle.

Now, when to crack the solitary bottle of '96 Dal Forno…

Cheers,
Doug
