    deep ruby. Dark strawberry and stones. Brooding and dark on the nose with some anise and stony fruits. There is excellent purity and depth here, but overall this is backward, quite muscular and brooding. A lot of stoniness, with some herbal savory notes, and really on the black side of Sangiovese. Still very tannic and almost backwards at age 15. This is early peak and quite enjoyable, but at this point more about potential. I do believe the potential is here, and I will hold my next blle for at least 3 probably 5 years in faith. Outstanding. 91+ pts (91 pts.)

Surprising, I think, as the '99 and '01 are both drinking well if given several hours in decanter. Both are outstanding IMO.

Lewis, I would agree to some degree. Ciacci is one of my favorite BdM producers, and this was pop and pour and followed over a few hours. I am sure that decanting for several hours would give a different evolution pattern than pop and pour. I’ve had the 99 and 01 several times, from barrel and in bottle, and at least for my palate, I prefer them with a little more age than they show now. I also have a cold cellar. The 98 though, I am really enjoying now. That said, ask anyone I drink with: I am regularly accused of liking mature wines. To each his own. Thanks for reading.

I do agree that the best drinking lies in the future for both the '99 and '01. I guess what I meant was that bith are open and expressive in their youth, given a good few hours of aeration, rather than being closed or painfully tannic.
