TN 1995 Calon Segur

A late entry here boys. Always one of my favorites (Calon Segur), finally the 1995 is taking form. An adolescent for sure, but the goods are there. Very complex nose of volcanic ash, peat, compost, wet earth, cassis, cherry, and pencil on the finish. Rich, voluptuous, and cascading on the palate. Penetrating fruit and tobacco in the mouth with said notes from the nose. This is a man’s wine! Robust and rustic. The late Madame Gasqueton would be proud. God Bless. 94 Pts

Jamie,

Alright, a 1995 that’s ready. Sounds terrific. Thanks for the data point.

Cheers,
Doug

Yes, thanks for the TN. I’ve been sitting on a few and it sounds like it’s time to start getting tempted.

Jamie,

Did you by chance decant big-time? I can’t recall if this producer utilizes a large Merlot component or not (I don’t think so). If mostly Cabernet sauvignon then it bodes well that the bottle was as open as it was (I’m sitting on a fair amount of 1995 left bank bottles that I haven’t cracked yet).

Cheers,
Doug

Doug, there is a merlot component but I am not sure of the % - probably your typical left bank blend of cab, merlot, cab franc. This was a straight up pop and pour and was singing from the get go. I do believe that a good decant or even an audouze would benefit it greatly.

Randy, if you have a few, you may want to take a peek. It is still an adolescent, but is really showing some wonderful complexity.

Regarding 1995, some are really starting to show nicely. A friend had a 95 Lalande recently that was singing and GPL is also showing very well. There are some snags though, a recent 95 Las Cases was a brick wall. I was furious with myself for opening that one.

I have a couple of 750s and a couple of mags. I’ll open a 750 this year.

Randy, definitely don’t touch the mags.

Just picked up a couple of langoa bartons from 95… Anyone have thoughts on these? Since i only have 2, is it a hold or go?

Has anyone had the 1996 Calon Segur recently?

Bruce

This might have been the first case of wine I ever bought. I am happy to let the remaining bottles rest. Thanks for the note.

Jamie - thanks for the notes. it’s interesting that you dub this a “man’s wine” because i’ve always thought of calon segur as more of a feminine and elegant bordeaux. i had the '95 back in february of 2011 and loved its floral and red fruit character…such a silky wine, too.

thanks again for the note.

This is brilliant, thanks. I just happen to have all of these-- 95 Calon segur, 95 lalande, 95 GPL, and 95 Las Cases-- and I haven’t tried any of them. Good to know what to try and what to avoid. I feel like we have similar tastes.

Great minds think alike! [cheers.gif]
