1994 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Shiraz Michael- Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra (2/15/2011)
Bought a case of this forever ago, and haven’t visited this in years. Still deep in color. A beautiful nose of black olives, meat broth, dill, and savory herbs. A lot of umami going on here. On the palate, this was supple, deep, full bodied and rich without any unneeded weight. Excellent balance and beautiful palate presence, with a great blend of savory, fruit, meat, acid, and tannins. This is flat out beautiful wine at peak and in no risk of going downhill soon. Great old school Oz. A complete wine that was better on day three than day one. 94pts (94 pts.)
Total shame that is not imported here anymore. This style of Oz shiraz is a screaming QPR and with age gains complexity and nuance, rather than just changing. That said, for what it fetches in OZ compared to here (higher Down Under), I can’t blame them for not importing at least the Michael and Riddoch level wines which I feel are pretty underappreciated here for their quality, and generally found on fire sale here. Even the black label is a ridiculous QPR.
i concur on the 98’s - it is my daughter’s birth year and i’ve got a bunch of it. and IIRC i paid about $25 for it - how often can you spend that on a bottle of wine and have it age this beautifully?
