TN: 1992 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve

  • 1992 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve - USA, California, Napa Valley (5/7/2022)
Decanted an hour before tasting. Faded red with plenty of bricking around the edge. Mushroom, hoisin, tobacco and cedar on the nose, becoming more expressive as it sees air. Faint red fruit, maybe blueberry and/or dried cherry, but the highlight here is the velvety round texture, which is just so plush. A lingering spice finish. No upside here, this is as good as it’s going to get.

This was made when Beringer was the weak sister in Napa in year when it rained buckets during harvest.
Was Myron Nightingale the winemaker??

Ed Sbragia. Who were considered the “stronger” houses back then? Mondavi?

He’s 30 for goodness sake! Get cracking! [cheers.gif]

don’t worry. He drinks well when he is here. We opened 2001 La Tâche when he passed the California bar.

It seems that Beringer Bancroft Merlot hit bull’s eye in 1992. Chabot Cabernet Sauvignon 1992 may be better than Private Reserve either.
By the way, does anywaone know anything abou two different botlings for Bancroft Merlot: regular and Bancroft Ranch Merlot Private Reserve ?

Still have a magnum of this.

Alan, is this the son who had a MMA fight that you posted a few years back? Congratulations to him for passing the bar!

I wish I had some Beringer’s left from 1992. The 1990-1995 years were very good for the Beringer PR and Chabot Cabs, as well as the Bancroft Ranch Merlot.

the same one. He realized after the fight that the guy making $ was the promoter, not the fighter. He quit fighting but still works out a lot. He turned some grades around, went to SMU law and graduated w honors, passed the bar first time, and is starting his fourth year doing med mal defense. He’s amazing.

Awesome! Cheers to him, and to you and Mrs. W for raising him right! champagne.gif

Ok, that deserves La Tache champagne.gif

That should be drinking pretty well.

Yep, great wines with plenty of value! The '91 PR is still my fav…

Somehow I read this as 1972, when Myron was the winemaker.

Of course, Ed was the winemaker then.

I have little memory of 1992 in California.
