TN: 1990 Sudiraut

Though there were no signs of damage and the cork was perfect, I’m having a hard time believing that this was a representative half-bottle. Served with a rich roquefort and a mild honey, the wine was not a good match at all – rather, it was run over by a freight train. No assertiveness, no palate presence, just like drinking viscous sugar water. [shrug.gif]

Anybody else had this lately? Sure, I generally prefer dessert wines with more acid than Sauternes, but this should have been more enjoyable.

About 3-4 years ago I bought 12 half bottles for something like $33 per. I had some high expectations and was very dissapointed with the lack of acidity. I’ve given most away.

There was a late release of this wine maybe two or three years ago. I believe I have had the late release three times and all were as you described it. I’ve had the original release twice, once very good, once disappointing.

Your bottle sounds, unfortunately, representative of this vintage.

Another person in agreement. The 1990 was re-corked (I think that the cork itself indicates as such). Very disappointing as it lacks any depth.

I also bought a half bottle in late 2006 and found it rather cloyingly sweet without much balancing acidity. Probably was re-released version.

Yeah, I bought a case of the 1990 in 2005 from Wine Exchange for $55.79/bottle. Sadly dead. My comments “Sweet, cloying, no minerality, drinking OK, but lacking any interest.”

I too have given away 33% and opened the rest after it was clear everyone was past caring. “OMG - a 1990 Sudiraut!!!”

Clearly something went seriously wrong with this bottling, and those selling us this plonk seemed to feel no need to disclose it to us before taking our money.
